Obituary

Ma rcell A. Johnson was born on December 23, 1948 in Baton Rouge, LA to the union of Joseph Johnson, Sr. and Pamela Freeman Johnson. He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph Johnson, Sr., and Pamela Johnson; one brother, Joseph Johnson; a grandson, Dawin Godcheaux, Jr.: Grandparents, Jordan Johnson, Louvenia McGull Johnson, James Freeman and Rosalie Ford Freeman.

Marcell graduated from Capital High School in 1965 and went on to serve in the United States Air Force from 1966-1976. During his time of service, he became Chaplain Assistant, Human Relations Counselor, and Air Traffic Control #29650 along with his two honorable discharges. He began working at the Tacoma Police Department in the Chaplain Department, he supervised Ex-Offenders and Alternative to Incarceration for Youth and Adults in Tacoma, Washington from 1970-1976.  He attended St. Martin Community College in Olympia, Washington where he received his Associate of Art and Social Psychology Degrees 1977-1979.  He studied Theology and received his Bachelor of Art Degree at Faith Evangelical Seminary in Tacoma, Washington 1980-1982. In 1982 he began to work in the educational field of Behavioral Health Services at the Counseling Center in Los Angeles, California. He also attended the Interdenominational Center in Atlanta, Georgia where he received his Master of Divinity Degree in 1992 and continued his education to obtain his Doctor of Divinity Degree at Faith Grant College in Birmingham, Alabama, 1998.

Bishop Dr. Rev. Marcell A. Johnson became board certified during the time he was studying his Clinical Pastoral Education Fire Units at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. One basic unit in 1991- Marriage and Family Therapy at Carraway Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. One-unit 2003, Princeton Hospital, Birmingham, AL, and two units 2007.

Bishop Dr. Rev. Marcell A. Johnson began to teach courses in the ministerial field: Tithing-A Serious Call to Biblical Giving; Introduction to Old and New Testaments; Revelation and Eschatology; Clinical Pastoral Education and Death and Dying. He also worked as a Church Administrator, Evangelist and Preacher with a focus on Pulpit Ethics. During his ministerial experience, he faithfully conducted Baptisms; Holy Communion; Marriages; Funerals; Worship Services and Workshops. He was also the Founder of Pneuma Ministries Community Development, Inc., The Mirror Church and the Pam Ruth Home (a home for women who were dual diagnosed with mental illness and substance abuse). He was also the President of The Board of Huntsville Public Safety Chaplaincy (Huntsville City Police; Madison County Sheriff; HEMSI and the Fire Department); Member of the Board of Directors for Hospice Family.  He became the Director / Founder of the Bayou Regional Human Services and Development (a Counseling and Community Resource and Youth of Tomorrow). He also served as Counseling Elder for several ministry candidates.

Bishop Dr. Rev. Marcell A. Johnson became an Ordained Deacon in 1991 at Louisiana Conference United Methodist Church (UMC). In 1994, he became an Ordained Elder at Louisiana Conference UMC; Former Member of LA Methodist Church; then he became a Former Associate Member of North Alabama Conference UMC and an Ordained Minister at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America.

Bishop Dr. Rev. Marcell A. Johnson began working extensively in his field at United Liberty Life Insurance Company in the Asset Management Division from 1981-1985. During this time, he also worked for the Extension Program of Baton Rouge, Louisiana He was the Pastor of the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Olivier, Louisiana and Mallalieu United Methodist Church in St. Martinville, Louisiana, 1985-1991; Lowes United Methodist Church, Huntsville, AL 1991-1992; St. James/Round Grove United Methodist Church, Shreveport, LA 1991-1994; Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church, Valhermosa, AL 1994-1999; St Paul United Methodist Church, Triana, AL 2001-2003; Springhill United Methodist Church, Madison, AL 2003-2005 and from 1994-2004 he was the Chaplain of Huntsville Hospital; Huntsville/Madison County Department of Public Safety 2003-2015; and Director of Pastoral Care at Huntsville Hospital 2004-2015.

Marcell enjoyed fishing, hunting, teaching, studying the word of God and winning souls into the Kingdom of God and spending time with his loving family.

Bishop Dr. Rev. Marcell A. Johnson was a man of integrity and a man after God's own heart. He has touched the lives of a multitude of people and left an indelible impression upon countless others. The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life and he that winneth souls is wise. Proverbs 11:30.

Bishop Dr. Rev. Marcell A. Johnson is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Marian Doughty Johnson. He is lovingly remembered by his three daughters: DeShanne (Reginald) Posey of Baton Rouge, LA; D'Andrea (Alan) Lillie of Puyallup, WA and Latonya Johnson of Houston, TX; two sons: Marcell A. Johnson II of Huntsville, AL and Jeremiah (Mariah) Johnson of Bristol, CT; Shannon Smith; Tomorrow Toney; and Angeleta Toney all of Huntsville, AL; two brothers Michael (Adrian) Dunn of Houston, TX; Carl (Risha) Dunn and one sister Carol Dunn both of Baton Rouge, LA; twelve grandchildren and a host of loving family members and close friends.

Funeral service for The Reverend Marcell Johnson will be Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. at Valhalla Memory Gardens with The Reverend Tiwirai Kufarimai officiating.
