Sister Bettye Douglas Pope was born to the late Pearly Pope, Sr. and Ellen Douglas Pope on May 21, 1933 in Madison County.  She was the oldest daughter of nine children.

Bettye attended and graduated from Councill High School.  She became an LPN after attending J. F. Drake Technical College.  She then went on to attend Calhoun Community College and received her degree as a Registered Nurse.  She worked on the staff of Huntsville Hospital as Head Nurse of the Dialysis Unit from March 2, 1970 through September 1, 1997.  She was also an active Volunteer Nurse with the Huntsville City Schools System where she worked in the clinic.

She accepted Christ at an early age.  She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, as well as another mother-figure to her three nieces, Rhonda, Angela, and Toni.  She departed this life on August 29, 2020, at Huntsville Hospital.

She was preceded in death by: her sister, Susie Claybrooks and Ella Jean Washington; brothers, Samuel Pope and Robert Pope, Sr.; and two special sisters-in-law, Frances Pope and Elsie Pope.

Bettye leaves to cherish her memories: one sister, Clara Arnick (Theo) of St. Louis, MO; two brothers, George Pope (Joanne) of Kansas City, MO and James Edward Pope (Rhonda) of Huntsville, Alabama; a very special sister-in-law, Ruby Bone Pope; special friends who were more like family, Debbie Steger, Lisa Steger, Angela Toney, Veronica Stone, Thomas Malone, Marilyn Montgomery, and Louise Bradford; a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, several great great nieces and nephews which she loved dearly.

Graveside service for Mrs. Bettye D. Pope will be Sunday, September 6, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at Northside Cemetery with Brother John Branch officiating.
