Graveside service for Mr. Thomas Elias Weatherly, Jr. will be Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Thomas Elias Weatherly, Jr./eliyahu ben Avraham Thomas Elias Weatherly, Jr./eliyahu ben avraham was born November 3, 1942 in Scottsboro, Alabama to Mr. Thomas Elias Weatherly, Sr. and Mrs. Lucy B. Golson Weatherly. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Mr. Thomas Weatherly, Mrs. Mary Donegan Weatherly Hunter, Mr. Lawrence Hunter, Mrs. Helen Pope and Mr. Alex Golson. He attended Morehouse College at age 15 in Atlanta, Georgia and Alabama A&M University in Huntsville, Alabama. He studied at Hofstra University, CUNY Manhattan and Columbia University. Mr. Weatherly is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He will have a traditional Orthodox Jewish service. Mr. Weatherly became a poet and educator. He worked at the Strand Bookstore (rare and first edition bookstore) in New York City for many years and The Lion's Head. His work career includes serving as a teacher of creative writing at St. Mark's Church in New York City, beginning in 1972. He served as poet-in-residence at Bishop College in Dallas, Texas during 1970 and 1971. He was a writer-in-residence at State College of New York-Buffalo in the 70's. He taught Afro-Hispanic art at Rutgers University-Newark and conducted poetry workshops at grade schools, universities, prisons and poetry projects. He was an avid bicyclist, computer maven and music lover. In later years, he split his time between New York City and Huntsville, Alabama. Mr. Weatherly's diverse roles as poet-in-residence, teacher of poetry and conductor of workshops helped him reach a wide range of audiences and spread his message in poetic form. He was the author of several collections of poetry including "Mau Mau American Cantos" and "The History of the Saxophone". Mr. Weatherly has been ranked with writers like Amiri Baraka, Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen. He leaves to mourn his passing a loving sister, Ms. Yvonne D. Weatherly, Philadelphia, PA; cherished daughter, Ms. Regina R. Nicholson, Marietta, GA; cherished son, Mr. Thomas E. Weatherly, III of Chico, CA; cherished daughter-in-law, Mrs. Sylvia Weatherly of Chico, CA; devoted Fiancée, Ms. Linda Murphy of Wilmington, DE; cherished grandchildren, Shelby Laws and Taylor Laws of Marietta, GA, Hailey White and Roman Stawpert of Chico, CA; cousin, Mrs. Earline Hudson of Nashville, TN; aunt, Mrs. Willie Mae Pope of Huntsville, AL; great aunt, Mrs. Helen Weatherly of Philadelphia, PA; special family, Mrs. Mary V.
