Shirley J.
Moore
Mar 16, 1947 — Aug 16, 2024
On March 16, 1947, God blessed the world with one of His most precious creations, sending a radiant and joyful souls to bring love and laughter to the Smithers family and all who would be fortunate enough to know her. Shirley J. Smithers was born to the late Everett Randolph and Alma Douglas Smithers, leaving n indelible mark on the hearts of everyone she touched.
With unwavering faith in His Word and trust in His path, Shirley took the Master's hand on August 16, 2024, and entered into His promise of eternal rest, surrounded by her loving family in Paint Rock, Alabama.
Shirley gave her life to Christ at an early age at Paint Rock Antioch CME Church in Paint Rock, Alabama. Her faith journey later led her to Gurley CME Church, where she served faithfully until her health began to decline.
She was preceded in death by her father Everett Randolph, mother Alma, husband Clyde R. Moore, brother James R. Smithers, niece Shelia Diane Smithers, and other loved ones, too numerous to name.
Shirley graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Scottsboro, Alabama. With a deep love for knowledge, she pursued further education at Northeast Junior College, Athens State College, J. F. Drake Technical College, and Savannah Vocational School, continually expanding her learning across various fields.
She joined the Marine Corps on December 27, 1966, serving faithfully and honorably until 1968. During her service, she was awarded the National Defense Service Medal in recognition of her dedication.
Shirley caught the eye of Clyde R. Moore, and the two were married October 1969. From their loving union, they were blessed with a son, Xavier Moore, who became the apple of their eyes.
She served as a correctional officer at Limestone Correctional Facility for twenty-five (25) years, retiring in 2010. In her spare time, Shirley loved cooking and baking, with red velvet and caramel cakes being her specialties. She enjoyed the sounds of Motown and had a passion for serving, creating the latest fashions of the time. Shirley was also the proud owner and operator of her own beauty shop in Paint Rock, Alabama, where her natural talent for hair styling flourished. She found joy in reading, watching the Los Angeles Lakers and solving crossword puzzles, which helped her pass the time in her beloved Paint Rock.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: a loving and devoted son: Xavier Moore; loving sister: Eleanor Smithers; caring brother: Ezra (Jeanette) Smithers; sister-in-law: Brenda Smithers of Savannah, Georgia; two grandchildren: Jabrihl and Brianna; two great-grandchildren: Ava and Mariah; two nephews: Petey and Keith; six great-nieces; two great-nephews: one special aunt: Effie Gaines; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
Her spiritual heart was touched by the hymns "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound" and "Sit Down, Servant and Rest a Little While."
Now, we say to Shirley -take your rest, faithful servant, and rest a little while.
