Funeral service for Mrs. Rosetta Crumbley Spencer will be Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Nelms Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with The Reverend Dr. Charles R. Winston, Jr. officiating.  Inurnment will be in Highland Memorial Gardens - Bessemer, AL at a later date.

Mrs. Spencer, a native of Bessemer, AL, is the mother of Minister Tracy Swint and the late Kim Scott Green.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer's of Central Alabama , a Birmingham based non-profit helping families care for a loved one with dementia. Checks may be mailed to Alzheimer's of Central Alabama ~ P. O. Box 2273 - Birmingham, AL 35201

Obituary

Mrs. Rosetta Crumbley Spencer, was born February 17, 1942, in Bessemer, Alabama, as the oldest child to the late John R. Crumbley and Lucille Thomas.

A native of Bessemer, Alabama, Rosetta was reared in a loving family and community. She was educated in the Bessemer City Schools. Rosetta was a member of the class of 1960, the last graduating class of the historic Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, Bessemer, Alabama.  Upon graduation, she went on to continue her education at Miles College. Upon transferring from Miles to the University of Alabama-Birmingham, she pursued training in the field of health care and nursing, culminating with becoming a Registered Nurse. She began a exceptional career as a nurse, making history as the first African-American nurse to integrate the Post Partum Unit at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Hospital. After serving the families of UAB, she decided to continue her career by transitioning to a specialty in respiratory therapy. In 1986 Rosetta retired after a stellar and fulfilling nursing career.

Rosetta had a deep and abiding faith. At a young age she was baptized and united in membership with the Morning Star United Methodist Church, Bessemer, Alabama. She maintained life-long and strong relationship with Jesus Christ as she was determined for her faith to grow and her light to shine. Upon relocating to Huntsville, AL she transitioned her membership to Center Grove United Methodist Church.

Rosetta married the Rev. Willie B. Spencer who preceded her in death. She is preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Donald Crumbley and a daughter, Kim Green.

In 2021 she relocated to Huntsville, Alabama. While in Huntsville she was a beaming light as she resided at the Regency Retirement Village Community.

Mrs. Rosetta Crumbley Spencer transitioned this life on Friday, March 1, 2024. She leaves to cherish her memory: A devoted and loving daughter, Minister Tracy L. Swint, Huntsville, AL; Granddaughter, Jasmine Green, Huntsville, AL; Great Granddaughter, Baylee Green, Huntsville, AL; Siblings- Cledith Crumbley, New Orleans, LA; Rev. James L. (Austria) Dunn, Fairfield, AL; Sharon (Morris) Teasley, Pleasant Grove, AL; LT. Ronald (Dina) Crumbley, McCalla, AL; John E. (Tonya) Crumbley, Pleasant Grove, AL; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

May the works I've done speak for me. May the life I've lived, speak for me. May the service I give, speak for me. When I'm resting in my grave, there is nothing said. May the works that I've done, speak for me."
