Obituary

Mrs. Norma Chandler Palmer, affectionately known as Nana, was born the only child of Peter Chandler and Marie Davis on January 13, 1920, in Birmingham, Alabama. God in His infinite wisdom quietly summoned her to eternal rest on Monday, October 31, 2022, at the tender age of one hundred-two (102) years. Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hamilton "Coot" Palmer; daughters, Geneva Ann Palmer and Ethel Marie Palmer Blair; and a son, Dr. Carl Leslie Palmer, MD.

Following the early deaths of her parents, Norma was reared by her grandmother, Mrs. Betty Cloyd. Thereafter, the family moved to Huntsville, Alabama where she attended the public schools of Huntsville/Madison County Alabama. She met and married Hamilton "Coot" Palmer. They became parents of six children.

Sister Norma C. Palmer was a faithful member in the Church of Christ. She remained an affiliate of the denomination through her connection with Blue Spring Church of Christ where she served. Sister Palmer and her husband were owners and operators of one of the two black owned businesses of dry cleaning in Huntsville. She often worked long hours and walked many miles.

When her husband became blind and later suffered a long-term illness, Norma continued to work as she became her husband's caregiver. Following his death, she was employed by the I-Winn Stores, Inc., for numerous years. Her love for children inspired her to gain certification in Early Childhood Development and work with Chi-Ho Children's Home and Jack and Jill Preschool and Kindergarten, Huntsville. Due to her early loss of her parents Nana was a fierce defender of children and their upbringing. She often watched the neighborhood children board the school bus safely and occasionally provided them with something to eat before going to school.

Nana loved her family and was known for her firm but fair personality and quick wit filled with wisdom. She enjoyed collecting pictures, newspaper articles and sending cards. She also loved the flowers and gardening.

Norma Chandler Palmer leaves a legacy of love of a multitude of family and friends who will forever cherish her life, including her daughter, Nancy Palmer Rooks, Huntsville, AL; her remaining two sons, Clarence J. Palmer, Texas; and Charles J. Palmer, Huntsville, AL; a loving daughter-niece, Neva Johnson Bright (Gene), Huntsville, AL; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
