The Life and Legacy of Mr. Michael Jurail Cash, Sr.
Mr. Michael Jurail Cash, Sr., the loving son of the late Jurail Cash and Ruby Mae Whitted Cash, was born on February 17, 1957, in Birmingham, Alabama.
He began his earliest years growing up in the Avondale Community. He professed his faith and accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. His spiritual journey began at Zion Spring Baptist Church in Avondale, Alabama. In later years, Michael united with St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Athens, Alabama under the leadership of Reverend Gary Battles.
Michael received his formal education in the Birmingham School System. He graduated from Carol W. Hayes High School in the class of 1975. During high school, he became involved in ROTC and quickly embraced the discipline, structure, and camaraderie it offered. After graduating, he proudly joined the United States Marine Corps, honorably served his country from 1975 to 1978. Along life’s journey, Michael met and fell in love with Lois Hodges. Michael and Lois were united in Holy Matrimony on January 2, 1976. Their marriage spanned fifty years and they were blessed to share their love with five children.
Following his honorable service in the Marine Corps, Michael carried the discipline, dedication, and commitment to service he had developed into his civilian life. He began working in security for major retail stores, including Parisian and others. His desire to serve and protect eventually led him to a career in law enforcement. Michael dedicated 20 years of his life to serving as a police officer with the Athens Police Department, where he took great pride in protecting and serving his community. After retiring from law enforcement, Michael continued his career in security, working for 20 years at Calhoun Community College’s Decatur campus. He spent a total of four decades serving and protecting others through his work, a true reflection of the kind of man he was.
Michael found peace in the simple things. One of his greatest joys was fishing, where he could relax and enjoy the outdoors. He also enjoyed trips to the shooting range. At home, you could often find him in his man cave playing video games or listening to old-school music on his record player. His favorite song was “Distant Lover.” Michael loved traveling with his family, especially spending time at the beach. He was incredibly proud of his children, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought tremendous joy to his heart. As an only child, he shared a special bond with his nephews and cherished them deeply. Above all, the greatest love of his life was his wife, Lois. The two were truly “tied at the hip,” and their love, friendship, and companionship were evident to everyone who knew them.
On Saturday, August 22, 2026, Michael Jurail Cash, Sr., made his final cast on this earthly journey at Huntsville Hospital, surrounded by his loved ones, and transitioned to peaceful waters and eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jurail Cash and Ruby Mae Whitted Cash.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife, Lois Hodges Cash; five treasured children, Nigel Hodges of Birmingham, Alabama, Anquenetta Cash Smith of Huntsville, Alabama, Michael Jurail Cash, Jr. (JoHannah) of Athens, Alabama, Shuquan Cash of Harvest, Alabama, Lelititia Cash Herston (Christopher) of Madison, Alabama, sixteen beloved grandchildren, seven cherished great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Michael Jurail Cash, Sr., was a family man, protector, Marine, police officer, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. His life was defined by service, family, and love. His presence, laughter, stories, music, and unconditional love will forever remain in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
