Obituary

Mother Jessie Mae Singleterry was born on April 15, 1929 in Mountain Creek, Alabama. She was the eighth of eleven children born to the late Jesse and Mary Davidson McDaniel.

God in His infinite wisdom quietly summoned her to eternal rest on Friday, December 2, 2022, at the tender age of ninety-three (93).

Mother Singleterry was united in holy matrimony to the late Leonard Singleterry on April 16, 1953. Five children were born into this union: daughter Janice Marie who died at birth; Leonard "Daryl" who died in 2010; Ronald; Crystal; and Mark. Another daughter Benita was adopted as her beloved goddaughter. In adopting her goddaughter, Mother Singleterry was following the example of her father who helped raise his sister's two children.

Mother Singleterry graduated in 1947 from high school, the Chilton County Training School. Afterward, she attended the Ruth Beauty College in Birmingham, Alabama and she also attended Drake Technical College in Huntsville, Alabama.

Mother Singleterry confessed to Christ at an early age and joined the Joana Baptist Church in Mountain Creek, Alabama. After moving to Huntsville, she joined Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor L. F. Lacy. She served in many capacities such as a mother on the Mothers' Board, Chairperson of the Decorations Committee, a member of the Women's Choir, Missionary Ministry, and the Shekinah Senior Adult Ministry (S.A.M.).

As the wife of an Army Soldier, she traveled extensively throughout the United States and foreign countries. During her travels, she volunteered at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii. In addition, she worked with the American Red Cross.

As a member of the Retired Regularettes Association, Mother Singleterry served as the Chairperson of the Amenity/Courtesy Committee, where she spearheaded and provided needed items to over 100 less fortunate families. She was also a member of AARP #1023.

Mother Singleterry was recognized by the Rosetta James Foundation as a distinguished elder who has made stellar contributions to the Huntsville and Madison communities. Through her personal ministry of home-cooked nourishments, Mother Singleterry provided comfort to bereaved families, the sick and shut-in, and to those who simply needed a home-cooked meal.

Mother Singleterry leaves a legacy of love for a multitude of family and friends who will forever cherish her life, including her three loving and devoted children, Ronald K. Singleterry (Ret. Army 1SG), Crystal (Jimmy) Blackburn, Mark (Floretta) Singleterry; Goddaughter Benita (Nathaniel) Dwight; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Romie Pelham; two sisters in-law, Billie (George) Johnson and Virginia Wester; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and special friends of the family, John (Rosa) and Dr. Joi Kilpatrick, Glenn (Dawn) Alexander, Jeanice Showers Bradshaw, Michael D. Smith, and Wilbert Brown (deceased).

Mother Singleterry will be forever missed by her family and friends, whom she embraced with food, love, and blessings. Some people make a joyful noise, Mother Singleterry also believed in making a joyful mass.
