Obituary

Mary Louise Underwood Nickles (Nooney) was the first born to the late James E. Underwood and Adelaide L. Underwood Bumpus (Harry) in Fort Payne, Alabama. Mary gained her heavenly wings on March 30, 2025.

Mary at an early age dedicated her life to the Lord. After having a life/death experience, she devoted her life back to the Lord. Even though she didn't belong to a specific church, she made a point of attending church services at the nursing home where she resided until her passing. Mary always let people know she was a living testimony.

Mary obtained her education in the Fort Payne School System, earning her high school diploma in 1977. After finishing high school, she joined the work force full time. Mary was a hard, dedicated employee at several jobs for many years until her health failed her and forced her to retire at an early age.

During this time, Mary married her long-time boyfriend, Calvin Nickles. Even though no children were born to this union, Mary enjoyed being an awesome big sister and wonderful aunt to her nieces and nephews.

Mary had a nurturing, loving, caring, fun and infectious spirit about her that attracted people to her. Her sense of humor kept you smiling. She lived life to the fullest. Even after the nursing home, Mary stayed on the go. Whether it was winning beauty pageants, riding motorcycles, or just shopping with good friends, she still got to enjoy life. She loved her family and her family at Decatur Health and Rehab. She spoke of us to them and them to us. She will be truly missed by all.

Mary is preceded in death by her father: James E. Underwood; step-father: Harry L. Bumpus; brothers: Jerrald T. Underwood and Donald R. Underwood; sister: Susan D. Underwood-Christian; and both maternal and paternal grandparents.

Mary leaves behind her precious memories: her mother: Adelaide L. Bumpus of Columbus, Georgia; brother: Jimmy E. Underwood of Chattanooga, Tennessee; sisters: Darlene Debrow (Levi) and Tracie Underwood both of Columbus, Georgia and Shirley Burwell of Harvest, Alabama; aunts; Mary Ayers of Fort Payne, Alabama, Mattie Williams of Buffalo, New York, and Dorothy Davenport of Huntsville, Alabama; nephews: Dominick (Rosha) Underwood of Rome, Georgia, Issac Underwood, Xavier Robinson, and Mar'Tavious Underwood all of Columbus, Georgia; nieces: Olivia (Kerry) Ray of Warner-Robins, Georgia and Tamia Phillips of Hazel Green, Alabama; a host of other great nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
