Obituary

Lola Mae Dickerson was born in McComas, West Virginia September 23, 1939, to Roger William Berger and Ruby Minnie Brown-Berger of Chatham, Virginia.

She was the seventh child born of 14 siblings.  Her father worked as a coal miner and was a Deacon at Ethel Baptist church in Ethel, WV. Lola lived an extended life, past the age of 70 years and was given grace to the age of 84 years.

Lola's spiritual walk started in Ethel Baptist Church in Ethel, WV when she was young, and continued through her life as a member of St. Marks Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. Lola and her family moved to Huntsville, AL where she ultimately joined Lakeside United Methodist Church in 1987 under the pastorship of Rev. Frank Lee, and became a member of the Lakeside United Methodist Women.

At the age of six, her family moved to Brights, VA. When she was in the 6th grade, they moved to Ethel, WV. They later moved to Bluefield, WV to reunite with her mother. There she graduated from Park Central High School in 1958, then went to Morristown Jr. College in Morristown, TN and received a degree in cosmetology.

After college, she went to New York City to look for work as a comb out girl. There she was hired by Sophie Tucker as a hairdresser and riding companion. Lola traveled to Canada, Greece, and England abroad, and to many major cities in the United States. Lola worked for Ms. Tucker until her mother fell ill in 1962.  Lola moved with her mother to Detroit where she met and married Emmett Dickerson, Jr. They married on July 6, 1965.  During this time, Lola obtained her second degree in Electronics from Indiana University in 1972, going on to obtain employment at RCA as an electrical technician. In 1974, Mark Adrian Dickerson was born in Newport News, VA and in 1975, Gin-I Anjanette Dickerson was born in Athens, Greece.

She returned to the states in 1979 when her mother, Ruby passed away in Newport News, VA.  Her husband retired from the Military and the family moved to Wichita, KS. There, Lola worked for Boeing as an Electrical Technician making motherboards for rockets.  In 1986, the family moved to Huntsville, AL. Still working with Boeing, she built cables for the International Space Station. She left Boeing to work for Chrysler until she retired in 2004. The family moved to Madison, AL. She lived there after her husband died at the age of 70 on December 20, 2011. She resided there with her son, as her caretaker until the Lord took her home on October 4, 2022.

The family will cherish her memories by how strong her faith was, how humble she lived, and the strength she displayed during the many trials and tribulations she endured. Along with the wisdom she shared, she walked in love and showed love to everyone she met. She will be deeply missed, and the memory of her smile will light the way for her family and friends forever .

She lived a life of faith, love, and was a humble soul.
