Obituary

Kent "Sarge" Rosevelt Smith was born on June 29, 1958, in Moulton, Alabama, to the late Mr. Prince H. Smith and Sarah P. McKelvey Smith. An Avid lover of music, Kent could often be found playing the piano or keyboard and singing whenever the opportunity arose. On October, 6, 2024, during the stillness of the Lord's first light, Kent answered God's call to join the Heavenly Choir.

Kent was educated in the Lawrence County School System and graduated in 1976. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served with distinction for over 17 years. From his first marriage, he welcomed three beautiful daughters: DaQuilla, Marquitha, and Angel Smith. While on sabbatical from the military, Kent met his second wife, Kema L. Sullivan, who became his love, his heart, and his forever for 33 years. The couple was united in holy matrimony on December 24, 1994, enjoying a cherished marriage  that brought them one child, Keshia Smith.

After leaving his military career, Kent was employed at the Huntsville Coca-Cola plant. He later continued his tenure with the company in Baltimore City after relocating to Ellicott City, Maryland, in 1995. During his time at Coca-Cola, he excelled and became the lead shop steward, earning recognition and loyalty from Coca-Cola Enterprises before his retirement in 2018.

Kent's faith journey began at an early age when he was baptized at the Freeman Tabernacle Baptist Church in Moulton, Alabama, where he joined the choir. In 1995, he became a member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he remained steadfast in his commitment to the Lord under the leadership of Rev. Walter Cox, Sr. Recognizing the absence of a men's choir, he started the men's choir with only six men. This quickly grew as he recruited men in the church. It didn't matter if you could sing, everyone has a voice. Under the leadership of various pastors, he went where God called him, but Kent excelled particularly under the leadership of Pastor Gay Green-Carden. Kent served as a Certified Lay Servant, Usher Board, Church Council President, Men's Ministry and gospel proclaimer; he would modestly step into the pulpit to preach the word of God among other roles. Even after he and Kema moved to Augusta, Georgia, in 2018, Kent maintained his powerful devotion to his home church, frequently traveling to Jessup, Maryland.

Kent Smith was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters: Ursula Smith and Annetta V. Brackins; his brother: Gregory B. Smith; and his Mother-in-law: Ezell M. Sullivan.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife: Kema L. Smith; four daughters: DaQuilla Smith, Marquitha (Marty) Smith, Angel Dixon all of Nashville, Tennessee, and Keshia Smith (Keith Partyka) of Chicago, Illinois; four brothers: Prince (Judy) Smith of Texas, James Smith of Huntsville, Alabama, Launceford (Ann) Smith of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and Domis (Princess) Smith of Fairburn, Georgia; two sisters: Wanda Smith of Nashville, Tennessee and Critis Fletcher of Russellville, Alabama; eleven grandchildren; one grandkitty; grandmother: Ronnie (Harvey) McKelvy Brown of Moulton, Alabama; five aunts: Naomi Davis of Courtland, Alabama, Monica McKelvy of Atlanta, Georgia, Marlene McKelvy of Richmond, Virginia, Rachel Mastin and Theresa Mastin all of Huntsville, Alabama; two uncles: Cedric McKelvy of Austin, Texas and Benjamin Bone of Huntsville, Alabama; brother-in law: George Brackins ; four sisters-in-law: Mildred Smith, Terri Pride, Cynthia (Pertis) Ayers, Josephine Sullivan, and Nikki (Marcus) Taylor; father-in-law: Jospeh Sullivan of Huntsville, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Special recognition goes to my Maryland and Augusta family. I love you with all my heart and soul.

Kent never met a stranger; once he got to know you, you became family.
