Obituary

On a cold January 7, 1957, Ruth and Jake Nixon, Sr. gave birth to Jake Laddie Nixon, Jr., in Harlem, New York. He was the first of their three children. The small native Harlem family flourished while attending Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church and soon they relocated to the Bronx, New York area.

Jake began his Christian education at Manhattan Elementary School, later renamed RT Hudson. His education continued at Northeastern Academy where he excelled academically. During his high school years, Jake was a founding member of "The Ecstatistics", an all-male gospel recording group. He had a sultry, smooth tenor voice and was well-known for his "Face-to-Face" solo.

Jake continued his education at Oakwood College, now Oakwood University, where he majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry and Physics. While at Oakwood, Jake sang in the world-renowned Aeolian Choir under the direction of Alma Blackmon, an accomplishment of which he was enormously proud. While attending the University of Northern Iowa for his graduate studies, he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Jake was an active member at Ephesus Church. He was a charter member of The Ephesus Boys Choir, later renamed The Boys Choir of Harlem, where his mother was their first pianist. He served as a Youth Church Usher, Deacon, sang in the youth choir, The Larks, and the Ephesianairs. He was an AYS leader, church board member, and sat on numerous committees. Jake was a Pathfinder and won several Temperance awards. Jake's greatest joy, however, was serving as church photographer under the leadership of George Saunders. This passion grew and gave birth to his professional work as an awesome photographer, and he ignited this same passion in his sister. While attending Oakwood University, Jake, resumed his role and served as one of Oakwood's church photographers.

Jake wanted to pursue medicine, but he found that he had a different calling to work with people in need. After working in the New York City Shelter system, Jake truly found his niche working in child protective services. His empathetic skills, matched with his keen intuitive ability to investigate allegations and engage people, made him a formidable investigator and one of New York City's first Sexual Abuse Unit Supervisors. Jake retired from the Administration for Children Services in 2014 after 34 grueling years protecting New York City's children.

Along the way, Jake made many friends he held dear to his heart from church, school, and work, and everyone has a " Jake Nixon" story! If you knew Jake, you knew he was a Yankees fan, Jets fan, and a Star Trek fan. You knew him as a truly kind, genuine, gentle, lovable, and loving soul. As an avid reader, he had a little knowledge just about everything and was an expert in many of them. He was the child that read encyclopedias just for fun. However, Jake , would Never be known as a handyman because he couldn't fix anything; he was all book knowledge!

In 2000, Jake married Aurora Ante, and they would have celebrated their twenty-fifth (25th) silver anniversary this year.

Jake lived his dream to retire and relocate to Huntsville, Alabama. After valiantly fighting cancer as hard as he could for over twelve (12) years.

Jake now leaves to mourn: his wife: Aurora; six step-children; his sister: Renee (Robert) Nixon-Simmons; younger brother: Jeffrey Nixon; three step-sisters: Stacy, Dana, and Amy; two step-brothers: Theodore and Jayson; two nephews: Jeffrey Nixon, Jr., and Brian Simmons; his niece; Ayra Mokontou, and two grand nephews; his aunt, Gladys Irvis; uncle: Donald Crews; a host of the BEST cousins in the world, godchildren, rock solid fraternity brothers, and countless coworkers, friends and church members who loved him like family.

Jake lived the life of a Christian man. He loved each of you' he will be looking for you at Gate #3; and yes, he will be wearing his slippers!
