Memorial service for Mr. Gregory Leon Tyson will be held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at 11:00 am at McKenzie Funeral Home in Tuskegee, Alabama.  Inurnment will immediately follow at Mt. Esther AME Zion Church Cemetery in Tuskegee, Alabama.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gregory Leon Tyson at his home in Huntsville, Alabama after an extended illness. He peacefully left this world to be with the Lord on May 28, 2025, at the age of 74. Gregory, better known as Greg, was born the youngest of nine children to the late Fred Lee and Johnnie Mae Tyson on November 13, 1950 in Tuskegee, Alabama.  He was a beloved son, brother, father, uncle, and friend who touched the lives of all who knew him.

After his parents moved north from Alabama in the late 1950s, Greg spent the majority of his life in Waterbury, Connecticut.  There he attended Wilby High School and married his former wife, the late Sandra Best.  From that union one daughter, Dawn Marie Tyson, was born. Greg attended college at Porter and Chester Institute.  During his time in Connecticut, Greg demonstrated his talents and skills through a number of jobs he held in the Greater Waterbury area to include house painter.  Greg also held jobs at Pratt and Whitney, Central Connecticut State University, and at a number of senior living centers across the state.  After his divorce from Patricia Alston, Greg moved south to the Huntsville area of Alabama.
Greg was a man of many passions. As a younger man, Greg was known for his debonair style in clothing and in specially maintaining his cars.  He loved R&B music from the 70s and 80s, great food, and watching his favorite TV shows on a summer day.  He also loved the water and enjoyed fishing.  Greg was proud and grateful to come from a large supportive and caring family.  Above all Greg loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and at one point became a born again Christian.  Despite any challenges or hardships Greg faced, he remained a faithful believer in the word of God.
Greg is survived by his beloved daughter, Dawn Marie Tyson, of Middletown, CT, a special friend, Pamela Thompson of Huntsville, AL, his cherished siblings, Leotis Tyson Sr., (Shirley) of Eden, NC, Barbara Wiggins (John Sr.,) of Trinity, AL, Lillie Head (Wilbert) of Writz, VA,  Joyce Christian (Will) of Gulfport, MS, and sister in law Imagene Tyson of Cedar Hill, TX.  Greg is also survived by his grandson Cameron Harrison, granddaughters  Chavone and Teiya Gardner, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fred Lee and Johnnie Mae Tyson, daughter Chanda Gardner, brothers William, Wallace, and Emmett Tyson, and sister Freddie Mae Green.   His legacy will live on through his devoted family members and friends.

As we say goodbye to our beloved Greg, we remember a man who lived life fully. He will be missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
