The Obituary of Bruce Wayne McComb
On Monday, October 29, 1956, the family of Reverend Jimmie Lee and Lucy Ann McComb welcomed their ninth child and seventh son, Bruce Wayne McComb, into their lives and home. Bruce would become the cherished "Baby Brother" who was doted over by everyone in the family, to include his younger twin sisters, who often called him "Moochie." With his quiet demeanor, Bruce was a very contemplative and deliberate in his actions; he was not one to engage in altercations, either verbal or physical. On Sunday, July 23, 2023, he heard the voice of Jesus calling him to eternal rest. His sudden and seemingly untimely demise left the family deeply saddened.
As a very young boy, Bruce accompanied his father to church at Beaver Dam Primitive Baptist Church; he eventually joined the church and was baptized by his father. In later years, he connected with Hope Community Church in Huntsville, AL.
Bruce was a 1975 graduate of J. O. Johnson High School, also in Huntsville. Unlike his older brothers who served in the military or who moved away from the agrarian lifestyle they had come to know to life in the big city, Bruce remained close to home, his dad, and the familiar. Consequently, he obtained employment with Martin Industries where he worked for many years as a machinist. Assisting the elderly in his community was his passion, and when not leisurely watching a football game on television, Bruce would carry out trash or clean up yards for his neighbors who could no longer perform these tasks for themselves. Though Bruce never played football, he enjoyed playing pickup games of basketball with the guys in his circle on "the hill or in the hollow." Eventually, Bruce's vision began to diminish, and he had to restrict many of his routine activities.
Following an extended time of singlehood, Bruce committed to one love and united in matrimony with Ms. Betty Brown-Bishop. Not only had he found what the Bible describes as "a good thing," but he was also blessed with a bonus son and two bonus daughters.
As Bruce took his flight to join those having gone on before him, he left behind to mourn his passing and rejoice in his life and memories: his daughter, Wanda Marcella Bishop, of Meridianville, AL; his brothers, Archbishop Carl (Christine) McComb of Newton, AL, and George (Johnnie) McComb of Huntsville, AL; his sisters, Edith Ann (Bishop Richard) Barnes of Lawrenceville, GA, Minister Hattie McComb of Nashville, TN, Bishop Mattie (Edward) Williams and Shelia Kaye Burress of Huntsville, AL; brothers-in-law, William "Billy" Brown, Felix (Theresa) Maxwell, and Robert (Ramona) Maxwell all of Lewisburg, TN; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Michael) Park, Barbara Brown, and Marsha Burns all of Nashville, TN; bonus siblings – brothers, Tommy (Joann), Robert, and Anthony Collier all of Huntsville, AL, and sisters, Lohelen (Clarence) Hambrick of Louisville, KY, Sally Cannon of Huntsville, AL, and Emily (John) Dasher of Montgomery, AL, his bonus grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
Bruce was welcomed upon arrival at heaven's gates by his parents, Rev. Jimmie Lee and Lucy Ann McComb, his wife, Betty McComb, son, Robert Darrel Bishop, Daughter, Karen Bishop Basila, brothers, Jimmy M., Hollis, James Lee, and Shelton McComb, his oldest sister, Reverend Larnell (Sis.) McComb Jones, and bonus mother, Lorene McComb.
"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus dies and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him." I Thessalonians 4:13-18 (Good News Bible)
