Life Legacy

Richard L. Surles, Jr. was born in Giles County, Tennessee on September 18, 1961 to Richard L. Surles, Sr. and Mary O. Surles. He was known by family and close friends as “Sha”.

In 1977, his parents moved their membership from the Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Elkton, Tennessee to the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist in Harvest, Alabama. A few years later, Richard Jr. confessed hope in Christ and joined Pine Grove.

Richard received his education at the former Toney Jr, High School and Sparkman High School. He enlisted in the United States Army on August 28, 1979. He completed his basic training and AIT in infantry, both at his first duty station in Fort Benning, Georgia. He did tours of duty in Baumholden, Germany; Fort Campbell, Kentucky and Fort Hood, Texas. Sergeant Surles was honorably discharged on August 15, 1992. Upon completion of service rendered in the Army, he returned to Alabama and made Huntsville his place of residence.

Richard Jr.’s working arena included the following employers: the Umthun Trucking Company, BFI Waste Management and the Buffalo Rock/Pepsi Company for seventeen years. He was a dedicated employee who really loved his job.

Richard Jr. was united in Holy Mat4rimony to Roquel Caldwell on March 28, 1998.

On Friday, May 4, 2012 at 3:30 a.m., Richard Jr. went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Reverend Tom Pride Surles and Amanda Harris Surles and his maternal grandparents, Thomas Marion Bass and Flossie Grigsby Bass.

Those who will forever cherish memories of “Sha” include his loving wife, Roquel C. Surles of Huntsville, Alabama; his parents: Richard L. Surles, Sr. and Mary O. Surles of Toney, Alabama; his children: Chiquita Benson of Nashville, Tennessee; Lakresha (Fred) Somerville, Richard L. Surles, III, both of Elkton, Tennessee and Plushette Caldwell of Huntsville, Alabama; his grandsons: Dorian, Savion and Gabriel. Savion was the ‘apple of his grandad’s eye’—“Sha” affectionately called him “Little Bill” and Savion regarded his granddaddy as “Bill”; his granddaughter, Chikayla; his sister: Jacqueline (Ronnie) Smith of Harvest, Alabama; his brothers: Reginald T. Surles of Brunswick, Georgia and Rodney, Sr. (Cameron) of Harvest, Alabama; his mother-in-law, Deborah Alexander and his father-in-law, William Alexander both of Houston, Texas; his brothers-in-law: William (Lavonya) Caldwell of El Paso, Texas and Dorian (Jocelyn) Alexander of Houston, Texas; his sister-in-law, Tedra (Daniel) Taylor of Houston, Texas; his nieces: Stacy, Charla, PerSephone, Kayla, Ariel, Kamya and Kaileigh; his nephews: Shaun (Dionne), Rodney Jr. (Nancy), Dorian, Dekota, Brian and Isaiah; his great niece, Jalisa; his great nephews: Jalyn and Courtney; his great-great niece, AriAnna; his aunts: Dorothy Jean (Willie) Davis of Tampa, Florida; Edna (Joe) Baker of Toney, Alabama; Delilah Dunlap of Los Angeles, California; Jeannette Turner of Huntsville, Alabama; Gloria Surles of Louisiana and Martha (Andrew) Reynolds of Elkton, Tennessee; his uncles: Eddie (Pearlie) Surles of Inglewood, California; William (Evelyn) Surles of Nashville, Tennessee and James (Barbara) Bass of Elkton, Tennessee; a great uncle, Freddie (Ada) Surles of New Market, Alabama; a great aunt, Bessie Draper of Louisville, Kentucky; a loving and devoted cousin, Elizabeth “Missy” Chunn; a host of cousins, friends and his associates at the Buffalo Rock/Pepsi Company.

Funeral services for Mr. Richard Lee Surles will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 10, 2012 from the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor C. Jermaine Turner officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Memorial Gardens. The remains of Mr. Surles will be in the church one hour prior to funeral time.
