Life Legacy

Mr. Melvin Boone was affectionately known as “Daddy Boone” and “Pops”. Brother Boone’s life story began on August 27, 1922. He was the eldest of eight children to the late Jimmy Lee and Florida Boone of Huntsville, Alabama. He departed this life September 6, 2012 at Kindred Nursing Home in Huntsville, Alabama after an extended illness.

Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years the late Ruby Doss Boone, his son: Wilburn Floyd Boone, sister: Ruth Mae Boone, and brothers: Jimmy Robert and Ollie Boone.

Melvin accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior and joined the Chelsea Cumberland Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. R. Stan Wood. He remained a faithful and dedicated member until his health began to fail. Despite the discomfort of his illness, he maintained a soft but constant refrain of “Thank you Jesus, thank Jesus.” His life exemplified the fruit of the spirit love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.

His formal educational training had its’ beginning at Chelsea Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Due to the hard times of the Great Depression, he quit school in his early teenage years to work full time to help support his family.

As a young man, Melvin served his country during World War II after being drafted in the United States Army. While in the military he was taught the trade of wood carpentry. After his honorable discharge, he attended trade school at Alabama A & M University in Normal, Alabama.

Melvin accepted employment with the Federal Government at Redstone Arsenal. After twenty years with the Federal Government, he elected to enter into retirement for the first time. But true to his Great Depression upbringing, he returned to work and spent another thirty years plus working for Allied Photo Copy, Inc., until his second retirement. However, he became restless and decided to spend many more years as an entrepreneur operating several business ventures until his health issues began to seriously impact his ability to work.

He leaves to cherish his memory two loving sisters: Nona Williams and Lela Douglas, of Huntsville, Alabama; one brother: Percy Boone, of Huntsville, Alabama; two loving granddaughters: Tracy Leslie (Binford) of Huntsville, Alabama; Constance Boone, of Decatur, Alabama; two great grand children: Isaiah Leslie and Kaylan Emerson; one devoted and loving nephew: Michael Ray (Brenda) of Huntsville, Alabama; two nephews: Dennis Williams and Kenneth Williams both of Cleveland Ohio, and other relatives and friends. His kindness and cheerful disposition endeared him to many devoted friends.

Funeral service for Mr. Melvin Boone were held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 from the Chelsea CPCA with Reverend Terrence Haley officiating. Interment was in Valhalla Memory Gardens.
