Life Legacy

Leroy “Lee” Barley was born in Huntsville, AL on November 7, 1936 to the late Walter Mae and David S. Barley, Sr. At the age of 77, he departed this life at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC at 11:17 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014.

Leroy was the second of ten children and was raised by his grandparents, Walter and Jeannetter Jacobs. He graduated from Council Training High School in 1954 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Math in 1961 from Alabama A&M University. Soon after graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in active duty until 1963 and reserve duty until 1967. Throughout his life, Leroy was an avid real estate investor, car enthusiast, do-it-yourselfer, and known by all for being a conversationalist. A man of many skills and talents, Leroy held many jobs and hobbies in which he used them in a variety of ways. In 1972, he moved to Washington, DC, where he was a DC government employee and retired after 22 years of service. In 1978, he married Patricia Love of Guntersville, AL and they had two children.

Leroy was born and raised in the United Methodist church. He grew up attending Center Grove United Methodist Church in Huntsville, AL and attended Brighter Day Ministries (formerly known as Congress Heights United Methodist Church) in Washington, DC until his passing. As an active member of Brighter Day Ministries, he was faithful to Sunday school, community outreach, and Bible Study. Most recently, he participated in a year-long Bible study class in 2012 and graduated from another year-long Bible Study class in 2013.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, David Owens. He leaves to cherish his life’s memories: his wife, Patricia, of over 35 years; three sons: Bryan (Kimberla) of Madison, AL, Marcus of Tallahassee, FL, and Le Roy (Vickie) of Raleigh, NC; one daughter: Patrice of Durham, NC; five brothers: Leon (Ruth) of Park Forest, IL, James (Carlene) of Huntsville, AL, David, Jr. (Dorothy) of Montgomery, AL, Henry (Eugenia) of Huntsville, AL, and Thomas (Doris) of Huntsville, AL; three sisters: Gladys (Johnny) of Huntsville, AL, Ella (Fred) of Harvest, AL, and Evelyn of Huntsville, AL; seven grandchildren: Allexey, Arianna, Avangelos, Alannah, Nigel, Nolan, Nathan, and an eighth grandchild due in July; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
